2002 Rules and Regulations

    Artist Booths
  1. Booths can be shared. However, all artists must complete an application form and must be chosen by the selectors.
  2. The artist(s) assigned to the booth must have made all artwork at a booth.
  3. Only artwork categories approved by the selectors (jewelry, sculptures, etc,) for each artist, per the approved application, can be sold at a booth.
  4. Artists must be at their booths at all times. Volunteers can relieve artists for short breaks. There will be individuals circulating among artists' booths to bring water and take food orders of lunch. (There will be a 2-hour break and lock - down to support those who will be attending the educational breakout sessions.)
  5. All artist booths must be set up and manned no later than Wednesday afternoon 12th of June.
  6. All booths signs must be quality made. They must look professional and at least one sign must state the name and tribal affiliation.
  7. Booths cannot be dismantled until the close of market on Saturday night June 15th at 9:00pm. This includes artist who sell their entire stock.
  8. Judges will visit artist booths to ensure that the market's rules and regulations are observed and that artists are selling only items that they are authorized to sell. Judges have information in what items artists are authorized to sell. The MNAA Team reserves the right to ask artists to remove inappropriate items from booths.
  9. Please be respectful of other artists and their booth space. Artists must keep their art within the confines of the paid-for booth space, unless granted permission to go outside those boundaries by and MNAA official. The four sides of each booth are clearly marked.
  10. The MNAA Team reserves the right to prohibit an artist from participating in the market based on the artists' failure to comply with the rules and regulations of the market.

    Artwork
  1. All artwork at the booth must be for sale.
  2. All artwork must be handmade by the artist himself/herself.
  3. All jewelry must be handmade. No synthetics, treated stone, blanks, plated metals or commercially made metals parts, except findings, are allowed.
  4. No factory - made components are allowed, such as commercial silver or gold beads, or decorative floral or fauna elements, or commercial beads of turquoise, shell, coral, other stones, etc., or manufactured sections of beadwork, etc, that are purchased and assembled or strung.
  5. No green ware or slip mold commercial pottery is allowed.
  6. All two-dimensional art must be finished, dry and ready to be sold.
  7. No artwork can be sold prior to the opening of the market on Wednesday.
  8. The MNAA Team reserves the right to ask artists to remove inappropriate items for their booths.

    Reproductions
  1. No commercially reproduced products may be sold. All art sold must be handmade or as close to handmade as possible by having the artist's creative hands in the process.
  2. No posters may be sold, including signed editions.
  3. Prints are allowed, but must be hand-pulled, limited to an edition of copies (per the 1990 Visual Artists Act), signed by the artist and consecutively numbered. (Copies of the 1990 Visual Artists Act are available on-line.)
  4. Catalogues, books, cassettes, CD, s, CD-ROMs, bumper stickers, decals, logos, etc., or any mass-produced item cannot be sold. Promotional material about the artist can be displayed only, and at eh artist's booth.
  5. No machine-printed t-shirts or garments can be sold.
  6. Judges will visit artist booths to ensure that the rules and regulations are followed. The MNAA Team reserves the right to ask artists to remove inappropriate items from their booths.

    Sensitive Material
  1. No object will be allowed for sale that is representative of an active part of viable religious ceremony and may therefore be sacred to a community of Native Americans, such as Iroquois mask, ceremonial kachinas, consecrated pipes, etc.
  2. No weapons (metal knives, firearms) are allowed for sale. Historic culture-based objects (bows, arrows, etc.) made for display only are allowed. Weapons are not allowed despite Native American decorative components.
  3. Endangered species legislation is observed.

    General
  1. Artists misrepresenting themselves or their art will be disqualified from consideration or asked to withdraw from the market. Misrepresentation includes but is not limited to selling someone else's work as your own.
  2. The MNAA Team reserves the right to ask any artist, after having been forewarned, to withdraw from the market for failure to comply with the rules and regulations that govern the market.
  3. The MNAA Team cannot and will not be held responsible for the failure of sales contractual agreements between vendor and buyer. However, because we are seriously concerned about the public perception of the market, we must make not of such occurrences by either party. Repeated occurrences will be grounds for serious action and will be considered during the review of applications.
  4. MNAA Team members cannot accept gifts from artists. Gifts of art can be offered to the NATOW Committee and or local Cultural Centers.

    Wisconsin State Taxes
  1. All artists are responsible for complying with Wisconsin Department of Revenue laws. Artist accepted for the market receive the required forms in the artist packet with the letter of acceptance in April. Please allow six weeks' for processing time prior to the market. Once registered, you never need to apply to the WI Department of Revenue again. Artists must have a copy of their tax documentation at their booths, or a receipt showing they have applied: representatives of the Department of Revenue may attend the market to verify compliance. Exhibitors are responsible for collecting and reporting Wisconsin Sales Tax.

    Insurance
  1. The MNAA is insured against public liability due to the conduct of the market. However, the MNAA is not responsible for any artwork, personal effects or any materials used on displaying artwork. Exhibitors should secure appropriate insurance coverage at home if insurance is felt necessary. Twenty-four-hour security is provided during the market for the duration of the market.

    Juried Competition
  1. Entries for judging will be received by MNAA team on June 7, 2002, between 8am and 11am. At the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council Building. The Contact person is Phyllis Wyse, P.O. Items received after 11am will not be eligible for the competition. THERE WILL BE NO EXEPTIONS TO THIS REGULATION.
  2. Artist registration and booth number are required to submit items for judging.
  3. Artist are limited to a total of (2) two entries for judging.
  4. To be eligible for awards, the following rules must be met:
    1. Items must be handmade by the registered artist.
    2. Items must have been made within the last two years.
    3. Items must be for sale during the market.
    4. Item must not be sold prior to the opening of the market.
    5. Item must not have been commissioned.
    6. Item must not include any part of an endangered species.
    7. All two-dimensional art must be suitably framed.
    8. No wet canvases will be accepted.
    9. Items must be sole property of the exhibitor.
