Position Summary

The consultant will assume the title of “Tourism Development Director” for the organization. Native American Tourism of Wisconsin (NATOW) seeks to develop and promote tourism in Wisconsin’s eleven tribal communities in an effort to attract visitors and produce significant economic benefits for Wisconsin tribal communities. The consultant will work under the direction of the board of directors to implement tourism planning, marketing and public relations campaigns to promote NATOW projects and activities, to provide technical assistance and training to tribes for tourism planning, marketing and promotion and other activities as they develop. The director also leads fundraising initiatives for the organization. The Director reports to the NATOW Chairperson or designated NATOW official and serves as liaison between the NATOW member tribes, Wisconsin Department of Tourism, and the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council.

Expectations and Responsibilities

  • Work with board of directors to develop a fund raising plan including goal setting and time-based objectives and tasks.
  • Coordinate the publication of new editions of the Native Wisconsin magazine and other NATOW publications.
  • Coordinate planning, marketing and staging of the annual NATOW Tourism Conference and golf tournament. (2017 event in Stockbridge/Munsee community)
  • Update NATOW website and other social media outlets on a recurring and timely basis.
  • Access the impacts of tourism in Native American communities and the State of Wisconsin through an impact measurement study.
  • Attend conferences, seminars, tradeshows, workshops and other education events as directed by the board of directors. The director will be expected to represent NATOW in a professional manner.
  • Coordinate with the fiduciary agent and board secretary to manage the finances of the organization.
  • Assures that all services are delivered in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Engages in ongoing networking activities to remain current on the availability of services available to Native Americans.
  • Performs other duties as necessary to fulfill these expectations/responsibilities.
  • Promote the development of Native American tourism for the benefit of the Wisconsin tribes and their surrounding communities, recognizing the unique contributions and significant impact tribes have on Wisconsin’s tourism industry.
  • Maintain a record of consultants activity; provide a weekly report to the board of directors

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in tourism, economics, commerce, communications, business, or public administration or related field preferred or related experience.
  • At least three years’ of management experience in tourism, economic development, or tourism/hospitality related field.
  • At least three years experience with a Native American Tribal organization/entity or a not-for-profit agency.
  • Grant writing and/or fundraising experience required; qualified candidates must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Professional demeanor and appearance; excellent problem solving skills, ability to manage time effectively, ability to prioritize multiple projects, self-motivation skills, work effectively under pressure, ability to build positive work relationships with internal and external customers, ability to interact professionally with a wide variety of people, and an ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Individual must be able to apply advanced reasoning skills to problem solving and use basic and advanced mathematical skills.
  • Must possess valid driver’s license and/or have reliable transportation with adequate insurance and ability to travel.
  • Must be computer literate and have basic skills in website maintenance and design, webinar hosting, social media functions, and mobile device technology.
  • Must be a member of one of Wisconsin’s eleven tribes.
  • Must be able to work from home office and/or remotely as needed.

Compensation

NATOW will provide an annual contract depending on qualifications

$60,000 - $80,000
