Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa
About
The Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa live along the shores of
Lake Superior overlooking the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The lake
is part of their being- it is what draws them back home. The Red Cliff Band
of Lake Superior Chippewa is the largest employer in Bayfield County, WI and
is governed by an elected nine member Tribal Council. Elections take place
annually in July right around the time of the Annual Red Cliff Traditional
Pow-Wow. The pow-wow is held every year on the weekend nearest July 4 on the
grounds near Legendary Waters Resort & Casino and overlooking Lake Superior.
The pow-wow is a public event and showcases traditional Native dancers,
Native regalia, Native foods, and Native singers and drummers. Two local
gift shops also feature Native American arts. Native Spirits Gifts & Gallery
and the Ojiway Trading Post offer traditional art from the Great Lakes
Region including beadwork, birch bark crafts, dreamcatchers, and much more.
Both are Native owned and operated.
Not only is this area of Northern Wisconsin well known for its artists, the
year- round outdoor adventures are also abundant. Enjoy skiing, ice fishing,
snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and dog sledding in the Winter, biking, hiking,
fishing, golfing, and bird watching in the Spring, and hunting, four-wheeling,
and the local harvest in the Fall. Summer is the busy tourist season near
Red Cliff, WI and beyond swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, sailing, kayaking,
canoeing, scuba diving, camping, and sightseeing, the tribe is proud to
announce the new Frog Bay Tribal National Park opening in August, 2012 and
also currently has a wonderful attraction to share with visitors.
On August 11, 2011, Legendary Waters Resort & Casino opened its doors with
lodging, gaming, dining, a marina, boat launch, swimming beach, and two
campgrounds. Legendary Waters Resort & Casino is located on the shores of
Lake Superior on the land belonging to the Red Cliff Tribe, a Band of Lake
Superior Chippewa. The resort and casino offers superior views from each of
the 47 luxurious hotel rooms. The hotel offers an indoor pool, indoor/outdoor
whirlpool, and spacious rooms with spectacular views of Lake Superior and
the Apostle Islands. Legendary Waters Resort & Casino also features gaming,
promotions, a beautiful adjacent marina with both transient and seasonal
docking, and two campgrounds. One campground is adjacent to the resort and
casino. Formerly known as "Buffalo Bay Campground", there are sites for tents,
trailers, and RVs. The Point De Tour camp- ground is just a few minutes away,
but seems a world apart with the wooded rustic camping sites also on the
shores of Lake Superior.
In addition, entertainment is never lacking in Red Cliff at Legendary Waters
Resort & Casino. The event and convention center has hosted several great
regional and local bands, and nationally recognized acts such as Williams &
Ree, Neal McCoy, and Lee Ann Womack! Legendary Karaoke and/or live music is
offered nearly every weekend and holiday. The events center is also available
for rental.
